Hiring the right IT staff can be extremely challenging, but it is a necessity nonetheless. One way to make it a little bit easier is to understand some of the more common challenges that companies face – and how they can be overcome.

Attracting Highly-Skilled IT Talent

Trying to recruit the right candidate? For that to be possible you first need to make sure that your company is actually able to attract highly-skilled IT talent to begin with.

The fact of the matter is that there are lots of companies competing over candidates with excellent IT skillsets. If your company is unable to attract such talent, your IT staffing is definitely going to flounder.

To be perfectly honest there is no easy way to overcome this challenge. Instead your focus should be on taking proactive steps to make your company more attractive.

Some of the best ways to do that include providing flexible working hours, making sure the salary and benefits are competitive, building a strong company culture, and so on.

Evaluating for the Right Skills

Needless to say you’ll want to ensure that the IT staff you recruit have the right skills – but that isn’t as easy as it sounds. The skills required for IT jobs vary quite a bit from role to role, and in many cases paper qualifications alone don’t really provide a reliable yardstick.

Simply put you need to find other ways to evaluate skills and test potential employees. Normally the best option to evaluate IT skills is to provide a practical skill assessment test, such as a job simulation.

Although it may not be feasible to evaluate the skills of every candidate, it is a good way to narrow down the field after looking at paper qualifications.

Staying Ahead of Staffing Needs

One of the most common challenges that IT managers face is they find it difficult to keep up with the staffing needs. Because of that it can be months before some roles in the company are filled.

Coping with this challenge is tricky, but at the end of the day it revolves around identifying your IT staffing needs early and beginning the recruitment process as soon as possible. For that to happen there must be communication between IT managers and recruitment staff.

Although it may not be possible to guarantee that you’ll be able to anticipate all your IT staffing needs, you should definitely be able to stay on top of most of them.

Turnover of Skilled Employees

Another common IT staffing challenge is that skilled employees often depart companies and end up creating a void that is difficult to fill. The reasons why employees depart can vary, but it is normally because they get an offer with a better salary, find a job at a better location, or want to advance their career.

If you’re able to retain excellent employees, it will definitely solve a lot of your IT staffing problems. While that is easier said than done, a good place to start is by making sure they feel appreciated in terms of their salary and benefits.

Aside from that you should also try to give your employees a path to advance their careers. That could be in the form of training, course sponsorships, and so on. If skilled employees feel that they have upward mobility, they’re more likely to stick around.

All said and done you should try to create an environment that makes skilled employees feel wanted and recognizes their importance.

Final Words

Now that you know the IT staffing challenges that you can expect to have to face, you should be able to prepare accordingly. If you’re able to overcome these challenges, your company will definitely benefit.

In the long term your goal should be to ensure your staffing needs are met at all times both by recruiting as well as retaining skilled IT talent.
