Network OrchIt’s already a well-known fact that with every new technology, there comes a bunch of new questions and misconceptions that everybody has. And the NBN is no exception for sure. The National Broadband Network (NBN) in Australia has gotten a lot of attention in the past few years, especially for the fact that there are certain aspects about it that people don’t seem to understand. This is the perfect time for the people to adapt completely to the idea of NBN, given the fact that by 2020, the technology will take over the entire country of Australia.

In this article, we made a list of four most common misconceptions and their clarifications when it comes to the NBN , after which you will have a much better understanding of the concept, for sure.

It Costs a Fortune

For an unknown reason, most people believe that it costs thousands and thousands of dollars to have NBN installed at your house. Well, the truth is that the standard installation of the technology will not cost you a single dollar. Unless you prefer having hard-wired access in some places of your home, all you need to do is to buy a modem and, of course, choose one of the NBN plans.

Current Internet Connection

The entire idea of this concept was for everyone in Australia to switch from their usual internet connection and get a NBN connection. But for some reason, there are a lot of people thinking that after switching to the NBN, they will still be able to use their old internet connection. That is definitely not true. Those will be disconnected 18 months after NBN will be made available in your area.

Overall Impact

Another misconception when it comes to the NBN, is the fact that the only thing that will change when you make the switch, will be your internet connection. Well, that is wrong, because your phone connection will also be affected. After 18 months of NBN in your area, your old landline phone service will be disconnected, and you’ll have to completely adapt to the NBN service.

The FTTC Technology

Not long ago, NBN came up with a new technology: Fibre to the Curb (FTTC). The thing about this new invention is that it is using a shorter stretch of copper network. This is definitely an improvement, compared to the old tech – Fibre to the Node (FTTN), which was using a longer stretch. This improvement definitely means faster internet speed. On a different note, the misconception is that everyone in Australia will have access to FTTC. Well, unfortunately, this technology will only be available in some selected areas.

Sometimes it’s really difficult to get used to all this new technology that’s coming our way. There’s a lot of information that we have to take in and a lot of aspects in our lives that change constantly.

NBN is a controversial subject in Australia, given the fact that people expected more and maybe got less. But a big issue is the fact that most people had a lot of misconceptions about the NBN, and once these get clarified, the situation will definitely be improved.
