BMC Software Acquires GridApp Systems

BMC Software today announced the acquisition of privately-held GridApp Systems, Inc., the industry leader in automating database provisioning, patching and administration. With the acquisition of GridApp, BMC is expanding its current offering of application, server, network and client configuration management to include database automation, allowing full stack end-to-end enterprise application deployment and management.

GridApp’s solution significantly reduces the cost, complexity and risk associated with deploying and configuring enterprise databases in physical, virtual and cloud environments. The GridApp solution is already integrated with BMC BladeLogic Server Automation and is currently in use by multiple joint customers.
“According to Gartner research, more than 40% of all mission-critical IT service outages are due to people and process errors and failures, with a significant number of those due to a lack of coordination between change management, release management and configuration management. Where organizations have not successfully implemented configuration automation, the increase in change activity results in a decrease in efficiencies and more human errors. Server configuration tools enable IT administrators and engineers to be more efficient and effective at executing system configuration changes.”[1]
GridApp’s automation capabilities extend the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management solution, empowering a broader set of IT staff to request and manage database resources in cloud environments.
“BMC’s Business Service Management (BSM) platform is a critical component for so many world-class companies because it has continued to aggressively advance its mission of simplifying and automating IT, enabling it to respond adeptly to the needs and priorities of the business,” said Scott Fulton, BMC’s vice president and general manager for Service Automation. “The acquisition of GridApp not only adds substantive automation capabilities to our portfolio, but also strengthens the overall BSM platform — creating the most efficient, consistent and comprehensive path to IT value in the industry today.”
Databases are one of the most complicated and critical parts of enterprise applications, requiring skilled resources to set up and manage. In fact, database administrators typically spend the majority of their time manually performing administrative tasks like provisioning, patching and configuration compliance.
As a result, many IT organizations have encountered substantial challenges in managing the roll-out, stability and configuration integrity of these critical resources. Not only is this inefficient and therefore costly to the business, but it also introduces unnecessary latency and inconsistency into IT operations.
GridApp’s solutions automate these administrative tasks, giving businesses greater IT flexibility, improving business reliability and creating a consistent, compliant IT environment.
