Cloud services may be growing in popularity, but so are concerns about managing the environment that provides them — particularly since most clouds (public or private) are based on virtualized systems that don’t work with traditional hardware-based management solutions.

Cloud’s reliance on virtualization pretty much guarantees that managing services will happen by evolution rather than via neatly delivered solutions.

The issue of cloud management is big enough to fill plenty of conference sessions, industry Webzines, and vendor strategy presentations. The fundamental issue is how to manage cloud infrastructure effectively without reliance on hardware.
