FireHost Releases FluidScale Rebootless Scaling Technology; Eliminates Downtime for Enterprise, Transactional, and SaaS Applications

(Dallas, Texas — February 5, 2013) — FireHost, the secure cloud hosting company, has transformed the cloud industry again, today introducing FluidScaleTM. This unique, enhanced scaling option knocks out the generally accepted notion that a reboot is required in order to add additional memory or processor resources to meet website and application scaling demands. FluidScale can be enabled and used with any of FireHost’s existing scaling options – manual, scheduled, or automatic – providing uptime assurance to enterprises, transactional, and SaaS businesses with high business continuity demands.

“At large, the hosting industry tolerates the idea that standard scaling options, which require a restart and thereby downtime, are sufficient. We serve companies with highly transactional applications and databases, often containing sensitive or financial information, so we know first hand how costly even a few minutes of downtime to scale up is for them. FluidScale was developed to eliminate the service disruption compromise of conventional scaling methods and make a meaningful difference to the enterprise,” says Todd Gleason, director of innovation at FireHost. “We position FluidScale to raise the bar for what all hosters and hosting customers consider ‘standard’.”

Before FluidScale, IT administrators were forced to build a costly architecture by over-scaling resources either horizontally with more servers than required or vertically in a single server with more processor or memory than needed to guarantee resources were available in the event of a traffic surge. Even with additional servers in a warm or cold standby (to save cost), associated downtime of restarts and configuration changes are required to increase memory and or processor resources during critical moments of scale. At these moments, time is truly of the essence and undue interruption is a costly proposition.

“Automated scaling on the fly allows enterprises to flex infrastructure resources – memory and processor – in closer alignment with the rapidly changing needs of websites and applications without the penalty of a restart,” said Philbert Shih, managing director of Structure Research. “Eliminating this problem will allow IT operators to run leaner and more cost-efficient infrastructure. Just as importantly, scaling on the fly maximizes the business case by minimizing user-facing service interruptions and reducing instances of sub-optimal performance or even downtime.”

FluidScale is available for FireHost customers around the globe with compatible infrastructures and for no added cost. Like all FireHost offerings, management of the service can be handled entirely online through the FireHost Secure Portal.
