When it comes to both online and offline systems, many business owners know that it’s important to think seriously about the security of their company. However, a large number of business owners also often lack the funds or time needed in order to take the necessary steps to ensure that their systems are as secure as possible. The fact is, however, that security can be as costly or as inexpensive as you make it, and there are certainly a number of security related steps that you can implement into the running of your business without having to spend a lot of money. Here we have listed a number of cost-effective ways in which you can improve the security of your business both online and offline.

Good Communication

When it comes to keeping a good standard of security, communication is key. The majority of companies take steps to make sure that their business site and systems are adequately protected, however a large number of security breaches often come from inside the company. Employees leaving passwords or door codes lying around on their desks, for example is just one instance of a common reason for a breach of security that many companies have to deal with.

Education

When it comes to staying safe and secure online, one of the most common security issues comes from spam and malicious malware sent to staff in the form of emails. For this reason, it is important that all employees are given adequate training on how to recognise such emails, and what to do in the event of receiving one. It is also worthwhile making sure that each employee fully understands their role when it comes to upholding physical security.

Track Your Keys

In order to ensure the security of both your physical office and your IT systems, it’s important that you track your keys – both physical keys and password keys. Keep track of which staff members have been allocated key to the office and number them when possible, so that you know where each set of keys are at any given time and whether or not you will need to ask a staff member for them back if they leave their job. You might also want to consider an electronic key system – check out metrolocks.co.uk for secure locking solutions.

Update Software

If you want to ensure that your business is as protected as possible when it comes to hackers, it’s vital that you keep your software up to date. This is due to the fact that the majority of hackers target older software versions as they are easier to hack into and gain information from. Set your software to update automatically, or if this is not possible track when updates are needed and assign a trusted member of staff to the task. Another way in which you could combat this issue is to migrate your systems over to the cloud, where the vendor will likely take over security updates.

If you’d like to add any more to this list, we’d love to hear from you in the comments.
