My Data Manager Shines New Light on the Ugly Truth of Mobile Data

San Francisco, CA – August 30, 2016My Data Manager, the popular mobile data management app, has uncovered the ugly truth of limited mobile data plans. In a recent survey of mobile users (conducted on Pollfish) and analysis of mobile plans, My Data Manager found that 54 percent were charged overage fees in the past year alone, averaging $2 billion. In response, 61 percent are angry, frustrated or disappointed, and 54 percent turn off data and stop using it for the rest of the month once they go over their limit.

This ugly truth is set to explode further over the next five years. The average American is expected to use 22GB of data per month, according to the Ericsson Mobility Report. Some users are taking steps to control their data usage. According to the My Data Manager / Pollfish survey results, 45 percent use the built-in phone feature under “settings” to check their data usage and 25 percent use their carrier’s website, but 11 percent use a mobile app specifically designed for data monitoring. However, that is not enough to provide peace of mind as 76 percent of respondents are concerned about exceeding their data limit every month. It is clear this is a problem that needs to be addressed.

The rise in data usage is also putting pressure on mobile carriers to alleviate the consumer pain of overage fees. Some have opted to replace these fees with a throttled service, which reduces surfing speeds to 128kbps once users reach their data limit. While this may seem like a solution, users will still be hit with a negative mobile experience. Frustratingly slow speeds may lead them to pay for additional access to high-speed data.

The survey results also highlight key findings about American attitudes toward data plans:

– 18 percent of respondents caved into overage fees to stream their favorite videos. Despite that, videos are also the first activity to be axed when respondents realize they are approaching their limit.

– A mere 26 percent of respondents report being happy with their data plan and 25 percent report their plan is too expensive.

“These results really shine a light on the heavy cost of mobile overage fees,” said Eric MacKinnon, Director of Product at My Data Manager. “By publishing these findings, we want to raise awareness on the overage fee crisis and let mobile users know that help is available. In today’s day and age, mobile users should not be forced to pay hundreds of dollars, have restricted service, or give up on using data for fear of going over their limit. With the growing amount of data being used, it’s just not sustainable. At My Data Manager, we know that with help, users can manage their data spend and avoid these unnecessary costs altogether.”

With My Data Manager, users can track their mobile data usage patterns and optimize their data spend. It will give them peace of mind as they won’t be concerned about going over their data limit or having their mobile experience throttled.

The My Data Manager app is a simple and powerful tool for users to take control of their mobile data usage and save money on their monthly phone bills. The app tracks how much data is used across devices, both for those on individual plans and shared plans, like those specially designed for families. It also alerts subscribers before the data runs out, preventing unnecessary overage fees.

My Data Manager has been downloaded by more than 11 million users worldwide. Check it out on the App Store orGoogle Play.
