Qlik Helps Ambulance Service Speed Response Times and Save Lives

Radnor, PA – February 25, 2014Qlik, (NASDAQ: QLIK) a leader in user-driven Business Intelligence (BI), today announced that the ambulance service in Uppsala, Sweden has successfully implemented QlikView to analyze data throughout the care continuum – from the initial call to the arrival of the patient at the emergency room – to discover ways to improve operations and ultimately save more lives.

Prior to QlikView, the ambulance service in Uppsala struggled to process the vast amounts of data being collected from ambulance staff, station areas, hospitals as well as incoming emergency calls from patients. Most of the information was captured as text, making it difficult to visualize and hard to make quick decisions, often in life-threatening situations. With QlikView, they are now able to extract valuable data from a medical decision application with preprogrammed features that serves as a questionnaire for dispatchers. The application makes it significantly faster and easier to capture data and presents the information so users can quickly detect patterns in patient symptoms and make swift decisions on necessary care.

In addition to the medical decision application, the ambulance service also uses QlikView to analyze how it distributes its emergency vehicles. By looking at data from past ambulance pickups the organization has been able to detect patterns in where vehicles are sent in a given week, during particular hours, down to the address level. As a result, the organization can better distribute ambulances so they are located in areas that statistically have more emergency calls. Organizational studies have shown that this redeployment of ambulances has contributed to a reduction in response time by up to ten minutes.

“During an emergency every second counts and QlikView gives us the power to accelerate decision making so we can save lives,” said Per Andersson, director of ambulance service in Uppsala County. “The analysis we are able to do with QlikView has allowed us to look at our data in a manageable way. Additionally, the depth of analysis enabled by QlikView provides great value for us and for our patients.”

“The Uppsala ambulance service shows us just how powerful data can be when it’s leveraged effectively,” said Ellen Derrico, director global market development, life sciences & healthcare at Qlik. “The insights they have been able to uncover drive significant value for the ambulance service and its patients in situations where quick, informed decisions can be a matter of life or death.”
