FREMONT, Calif. — September 10, 2013— SGI (NASDAQ: SGI), the trusted leader in technical computing and big data, today announced support for Intel’s newest Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family.  This new microprocessor provides a 37 percent increase in peak performance per rack of its ICE™ X supercomputer as well as new performance records for its Rackable line of servers. Now harnessing the newest Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family, SGI ICE X, Rackable and Modular InfiniteStorage™ products allow customers to run more jobs in the same footprint as previous generations, enabling scientific innovation and bringing new products to market more quickly.  Customers can now take advantage of up to 50 percent more cores per socket, increased processing speeds and improved energy consumption.

SGI customers across the government, financial services, sciences and research, education and manufacturing industries will benefit from intelligent turbo engagement and an approximate 30 percent reduction in power consumption when leveraging SGI servers incorporated with Intel Turbo Boost®. The latest generation of Xeon-based servers will also allow for greater workload consolidation and virtualization – including the ability to bring total cost of ownership (TCO) reductions of 66 percent.

SGI is proud to announce several SGI cluster solutions wins and installations at NASA, Irish Center for High-End Computing (ICHEC), and T-Systems with the Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2. ICHEC installed 10 racks of SGI ICE X servers with 8,320 cores of the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 as well as a large 1.7TB UV2000 shared memory system and Intel Xeon Phi™ processors.  This represents a fourfold increase in the computational power available to Irish researchers and has the added benefit of bringing together different computational architectures into a common user environment enabling the most appropriate tool to be used for the problem being addressed. The new SGI systems will enable much larger and more detailed problems to be simulated and analyzed in fields such as weather and climate forecasting, materials science and bioinformatics.

Additionally, SGI installed at NASA 46 new racks of the ICE X product with the new Xeon processor E5-2690 v2 in less than four weeks, tying them into the existing Pleiades system for an overall 2.88 Petaflop peak performance with no user downtime. NASA is using the new SGI ICE X machine to research 136 new planets, analyzing that data to find answers of possible new earths, unsettled areas and much more.  “NASA Ames continues to push the boundaries of compute performance,” says Piyush Mehrotra, chief of the NASA Advanced Supercomputer Division at Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif. “The expansion of the Pleiades supercomputer provides increased computational power to support missions in aeronautics, Earth and space sciences, and space exploration across the agency.”

“High-performance computing once reserved to a privileged few has become a fundamental driver of research and development competitiveness for all – ranging from small manufacturers to the largest national research labs,” said Rajeeb Hazra,  vice president Datacenter and Connected Systems Group and general manager of Technical Computing Group. “Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v2 processors powering SGI’s unique platform solutions deliver outstanding performance and energy efficiency that enable customers to compete and win through a wide range of applications from modeling and analysis, to data driven science and analytics, and beyond.”

“We are pleased to support the new Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v2 within our SGI Rackable, SGI ICE X and Infinite Storage suite of solutions. This continued commitment to speed, scale and efficiency further establishes our dedication to bring the most innovative solutions to our customers,” said Jorge Titinger, president and CEO of SGI.

Continue to Raise the Bar with World Record Benchmarks

SGI continues to see performance and density gains. The ICE X system maintains the 11th and 14th position on the top 500 and, not surprisingly, the world record benchmark for SPEC MPIM2007, with a SPECmpiM_2007 result of 94.9 for the SGI ICE X product with the Intel Xeon processor E5-2690 v2.  Additionally, SGI Rackable with Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 processors holds many best-in-class records:

1)     Best-in-class performance for SPEC MPIM2007 at 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 sockets based on the SPECmpiM_2007 metric

2)     Best-in-class performance for SPEC MPIL2007 at 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128 chips based on the SPECmpiL_2007 metric

3)     Best-in-class performance for SPEC OMPG2012 at 2 sockets based on the SPECompG_2012 metric

Scale-out for Technical Computing and Big Data Gets a Boost

SGI has been a leading supplier of large-scale, high performance technical compute and big data clusters to both large commercial enterprises and key government agencies.  SGI customers push the envelope for performance, usability, scale, power, cooling and manageability.   The incorporation of Intel’s new processor family will enhance SGI product lines, continuing to empower businesses and institutions to achieve previously unattainable insights, results and innovation.
