Opscode Hosted Chef Enables Continuous Integration of Application Updates to Accelerate Time-to-Market

SEATTLE – November 13, 2012 – Opscode®, the leader in cloud infrastructure automation, today announced that Splunk, the leading provider of software for real-time operational intelligence, has deployed Opscode Hosted Chef™ to deliver its Splunk Storm SaaS platform. Using Hosted Chef, Splunk has automated the Amazon EC2 infrastructure supporting Splunk Storm, enabling continuous delivery of application updates, while significantly reducing manual resource management.

Splunk software collects, indexes and harnesses the machine-generated big data coming from the websites, applications, servers, networks and mobile devices that power business. Splunk Storm delivers the benefits of Splunk software as a hosted service for the cloud, providing operational intelligence for organizations looking to gain comprehensive insight into their cloud infrastructure. Splunk uses Amazon EC2 cloud resources to power Splunk Storm, ensuring maximum scalability in meeting customer demand.

“As more organizations and developers move projects to the cloud, Splunk Storm offers them a way to immediately gain visibility and insight into cloud-based applications,” said Gaurav Gupta, vice president of cloud products, Splunk. “Hosted Chef enables us to provide our customers the ability to monitor, search and analyze machine data in the cloud. Its ability to automate basic configuration to application updates has helped us to bring innovation to market much faster.”

“Splunk has already proven to be an invaluable tool for enterprise IT,” said Adam Jacob, Chief Customer Officer, Opscode. “By using Hosted Chef to deliver the same differentiated value via a SaaS platform, Splunk is bringing real visibility and analytics to cloud computing.”

Hosted Chef provides the Splunk Storm team with a model for reuse that enables servers, environments and application delivery to be automated and integrated into a seamless development pipeline. By automating everything from basic configuration and maintenance to infrastructure-wide updates and application delivery, Splunk has created a highly consistent, reliable SaaS platform with minimal management overhead.

Customer Benefits:

  • Continuous Delivery: Using Hosted Chef, the Splunk Storm team can develop, test, stage and deploy new application updates at any time, rapidly accelerating the pace of innovation and time-to-market for Splunk’s SaaS platform.
  • Business Agility: Hosted Chef enables the Splunk Storm development team to deploy infrastructure as code, meaning developers can easily spin up new resources on-demand, eliminating resource access as a bottleneck to productivity. With Hosted Chef, Splunk can adjust to changes in demand and maximize the flexibility of Amazon EC2 in responding to customer demand.
  • Reduced Management: With Hosted Chef, Splunk has been able to automate resource configuration and provisioning for its Splunk Storm platform, eliminating nearly all manual management and ensuring its infrastructure is repeatable and consistent.
