Tips for Growing a Successful IT Business

When it comes to Information Technology, the field is so broad and so varied that the average person isn’t quite sure what they are looking for when they need a professional. Are you in the business of telecommunications or perhaps your emphasis is on business administration or HR software? If you are looking to grow a successful IT business, the first step is probably going to be the most important and that is to define clearly what it is you do – and don’t do as the case may be. From there you can start working towards the ultimate goal of growing a successful and lucrative IT business in your niche.

Carve Your Niche Carefully

Many times one area of IT overlaps another but that doesn’t mean you will do both equally well. What is it you do? As an example, anyone not in the profession of Information Technology might not understand the very basic difference between a software engineer and a programmer but they are not alone. the job titles are often misunderstood and that’s why it is important that you actually narrow it down and go after the exact niche you are expert in. A software engineer designs what a programmer puts into play. if you are going to market your company, it is vital that you make a clear distinction of exactly what it is you do.

You Need at Least One Team Member with an MBA

Why would you need anyone who has successfully completed a Masters in Business Administration program? That is the $64,000 question and one that bears careful consideration. If you are going to grow a successful and lucrative – the important word here being lucrative – IT business, you need someone on board who understands the principles of business administration. Even an accountant wouldn’t be able to understand sound business principles so if you don’t have the budget for a new hire, appoint one of your team members to pursue an online MBA degree.

That person will bring back what they learn as they better themselves and help your company to grow and expand. You will find that it is much more cost effective to pay for an online Masters in Business Administration degree than it would be to provide a new hire benefits package to recruit an MBA graduate.

Marketing 101 for IT Professionals

Now here is where you really can have the most fun. You are, after all, an IT startup so why not put all that knowledge to work for you where it counts? Marketing may not be your game but technology certainly is! Why not write a small app and release it for free as a marketing tool? There are so many freebies you can come up with as an IT startup that it makes the head spin, and hopefully the inner workings of your business plan! Everyone likes to get something for nothing and as part of your marketing strategy you can certainly come up with a small but useful app within your niche that shows just how creative and expert you are in your field.

One thing is for certain and that is the fact that you know (and live!) Information Technology. Now put that knowledge to work with a sound business plan developed by your Business Admin team and you will begin to see the results. It pays to invest in your own company so take the talent you have, help them grow and in return everyone’s a winner – and that means you!
