Why Digital Marketing is Not What Many Small Businesses Assume It is

Web Digital Age

Recently we have seen a trend of small businesses leaping into the world of digital marketing with full enthusiasm and hope that the business will exponentially profit, only to be disappointed in a short period of time later because the reality did not meet their expectations. What went wrong? We have discussed below what small businesses fail to understand.

Marketing Needs Capital:

Digital marketing is cheaper than traditional marketing most of the time, but it is not absolutely free. You will have to invest in many stages of digital marketing such as deploying effective PPC campaigns or buying SEO tools. There are many stages where you will have to invest substantial capital if you wish to gain a good outcome hence digital marketing can be done freely but effective marketing will need you to spend some money.

Skipping a Step in the Conversion Chain:

The conversion chain has many steps involved in it such as awareness, engagement, buy, recommend and repeat. Skipping any step is not going to help in engagement. Small brands assume that the awareness stage is just a waste of time and money and skip to the next stages but why will someone want to buy from a brand they are unaware of? Customers will not trust a brand they have never heard about hence do not skip any steps in the conversion cycle.

Additional Effort Needed:

Digital marketing is not a one-day job that you can do it parallelly along with running your own business. It needs lots of effort and also knowledge about marketing strategy hence you will have to hire a team of experts to do it effectively.

Same Strategy Does Not Work for Everyone:

A marketing strategy which has worked for a big company may not work for your small company as the requirement of each company is different. Many small businesses make this mistake of copying successful strategies of other large firms only to be disappointed.

Let the Experts do Their Job:

What is the point of hiring marketing experts if you keep steering them? Small company owners treat marketers as their other employers and try to dictate them their own strategies. You have hired them because it is their strength and not yours hence tell them what you expect and leave the rest up to them.

Misunderstanding the ROI Concept:

Small businesses tend to generate organic traffic rather than paid as the cost involved is nil but what they do not understand is organic ranking may take years to build and they need to work on reaching out to the maximum audience so that their brand gets recognized which will improve their organic ranking as well and give them a good Return-on-Investment (ROI).

Creating Progressive Strategy:

Small businesses tend to suddenly land into the idea of doing digital marketing and the mistake they make is to try to make as much marketing efforts as possible in a short span of time and exhaust all the budget. Digital marketing requires you to grow your strategy slowly and steadily and trying to apply all marketing strategies in a day is only going to be a waste of time and money. Grow your marketing reach gradually.

Conclusion:

If you are an entrepreneur running a small company, understand your marketing needs and research well about how digital marketing will work for your business because creating a marketing campaign to improve engagement rate is not as easy as it looks.
