Aberdeen Group compares build vs. buy considerations for embedded BI

Orlando, Fla — June 07, 2012 — Delivering the future of business analytics, Pentaho Corporation today announced the availability of a new analyst report issued by Aberdeen Group that examines the organizational impact of buying commercially available BI tools as compared with taking a homegrown approach to BI. The report titled “Build vs. Buy with BI: Key Strategies for Embedded Analytics,” examines three different approaches to embedded BI using data from 119 respondents.

With 44 percent of respondents experiencing the lack of resources as their number one challenge in delivering BI, Aberdeen examines whether a buy, build, or hybrid approach is the best for organizations to build their path to increased analytical adoption.

  • Top challenges and benefits of an embedded BI strategy
  • Key recommendation for buy vs. build decision

“Our research demonstrates that companies buying off-the-shelf BI functionality saw a greater adoption rate of their CRM tools than those using homegrown BI,” said Michael Lock, research director and group leader, business intelligence, Aberdeen Group. “Having BI as part of the pre-deployed CRM tool increases the attractiveness of the solution, and ultimately boosts its adoption.”

“For a buy vs. build decision, there is always a tradeoff between fast time to market and the need to have full control over the product architecture,” said Farnaz Erfan, product marketing, SaaS and ISV solutions, Pentaho. “In our experience, unless analytics is the core competency of the organization, ISV product teams rather conserve their internal resources on their core business, leaving analytics to the experts – who have the product as well as the technology expertise to be great partners and guarantee ISV’s success.”
