Eucalyptus Launches the Third Generation of its Enterprise Private Cloud Software

August 26, 2011 No Comments

SOURCE: Eucalyptus Systems

Eucalyptus Systems, creators of the most widely deployed private and hybrid cloud platform, today announced Eucalyptus 3: the third generation of the Eucalyptus on-premise Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud computing software. Eucalyptus 3 is designed to be the most comprehensive enterprise-grade, open source IaaS platform, targeted at organizations that require feature-rich, highly available, extremely reliable and easily managed private and hybrid clouds. Eucalyptus is the only IaaS solution that gives customers the assurance that the applications and data in their enterprise private and hybrid clouds are highly available and will not be affected by underlying hardware or network failure.

“High availability is one of the most sought-after and difficult features to implement in a private cloud platform. Eucalyptus is pioneering this space by offering HA as a built-in standard feature in open source software,” said Mårten Mickos, Eucalyptus Systems CEO. “Developed with the expertise gained by working on production cloud deployments for over two years, Eucalyptus 3 gives demanding enterprises the power of elastic cloud computing along with the features required to support their strategic businesses initiatives.”

The Eucalyptus private and hybrid cloud platform is designed specifically to meet the requirements of cloud computing in an enterprise environment. Today, Eucalyptus cloud software has been started up over 25,000 times across the globe, with leading organizations including PUMA, USDA, Plinga, Aerospace Corporation, InterContinental Hotels Group, Wetpaint, USASpending.gov and many others deploying Eucalyptus for elastic, scalable and secure on-demand cloud computing. Today, at least 21 of the Fortune 100 companies have started a Eucalyptus cloud.

“Enterprises implement private cloud computing when public clouds do not meet their requirements for service levels, security and compliance. Enabling hybrid capabilities when developing a private cloud architecture is also important to avoid lock-in and allow choice in the future,” said Thomas Bittman, vice president and distinguished analyst, Gartner.

Eucalyptus 3: Enterprise Private and Hybrid Clouds with High Availability

Eucalyptus 3 is a robust, affordable IaaS platform designed for implementing large-scale private and hybrid cloud deployments in the enterprise. Key new features and functionality in Eucalyptus 3 include:

High Availability

Eucalyptus 3 is architected to allow no single point of failure. If a system crashes due to any reason – a failure in disk drives, memory corruption or even a network or power outage – Eucalyptus 3 will immediately trigger a fail over to a “hot spare” service that is running concurrently on a different physical machine. This information is quickly propagated internally to reflect the change while showing no signs of underlying failure to the external world. This failover process is smooth, fast, and totally transparent to Eucalyptus cloud users. With its new high availability capabilities, Eucalyptus will continue to run even when hardware or network components fail.  As a result, the underlying failures in the infrastructure will not affect the user experience or the uptime guaranteed in the Service Level Agreement (SLA).

Enhanced Resource Access Control (RAC)

Eucalyptus 3 also features significant enhancements to its resource access controls (RAC), enabling Eucalyptus cloud administrators to finely tune user group management, perform in-depth cost tracking, and benefit from detailed visibility of cloud usage throughout an enterprise.

New RAC features in Eucalyptus 3 include implementation support for the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Identity and Access Management (IAM) API and new service-level management mechanisms that enable customers to apply additional control over groups of users. To ease integration with existing data center software infrastructure Eucalyptus 3 can also automatically map identities from enterprise LDAP and Active Directory (AD) servers to Eucalyptus accounts, groups, and users. Finally, it includes expanded account and resource reporting interfaces for integration with existing data center chargeback and billing systems. Eucalyptus 3 also includes a wide range of additional cloud storage resource and platform enhancements, such as: Boot from EBS, NetAPP and JBOD SAN drivers, and support for VMware 4.1, RHEL 6.0 and KVM.

“We recently went into full production with Eucalyptus at Plinga, after moving 400 Amazon virtual servers over to a cost-effective, flexible Eucalyptus cloud running on secure on-premise infrastructure,” said Thorsten Lubinski, CTO at social games publisher Plinga. “We have been extremely impressed with Eucalyptus’ reliability and scalability as well as the dedicated, expert service from the Eucalyptus support team. High availability is an important component of any enterprise cloud, and with Eucalyptus 3, we will get the added assurance that Plinga games will always be available to our global users.”

Availability

The next generation of Eucalyptus 3 software will be available in the fourth quarter. For more information, including detailed pricing, please visit www.eucalyptus.com or call +1-866-456-3822 (EUCA).

“RightScale customers are increasingly adopting private and hybrid clouds as part of their enterprise IT strategies, and Eucalyptus 3 has made a giant leap in delivering the high availability and security enterprises require. With Eucalyptus 3 and the RightScale myCloud management platform, customers can easily leverage existing on-premise hardware to deliver scalable, automated on-premise and hybrid clouds that support business-critical applications requiring high availability.”

Mike Maciag, CEO, Electric Cloud

“Private clouds are widely used among engineering teams in the enterprise to improve software development, testing and deployment, and Eucalyptus 3 provides an enterprise grade cloud solution. With Eucalyptus 3 and Electric Cloud, teams can automate the software build-test-deploy process on cloud resources to achieve greater development agility, create higher quality software and speed time-to-market.”

David Bagley, CEO, enStratus

“Cloud computing adoption among mainstream enterprises is growing and will accelerate with the delivery of next-generation solutions like Eucalyptus 3. Eucalyptus is delivering critical features like HA and centralized resource access controls. Eucalyptus 3 combined with the enStratus cloud infrastructure management platform gives organizations everything they need to deploy and operate enterprise-class applications with sensitive data in hybrid and private clouds environments.”

Jeff Schneider, CEO, MomentumSI

“MomentumSI brings enterprise IT organizations self-service private and hybrid clouds built on the industry’s leading technologies such as Eucalyptus. Eucalyptus continues to raise the bar with Eucalyptus 3, which is the only open source IaaS solution that gives customers the assurance that their clouds will be highly available and ‘always on.’ This major new version of Eucalyptus creates a compelling, enterprise-ready option for executives who want to transform their IT departments into internally-managed versions of a public cloud service.”

Adam Jacob, co-founder and Chief Product Officer, Opscode

“We are seeing an increasing demand for Eucalyptus and the dynamically scalable cloud computing environments it provides to customers. With the next generation of Eucalyptus and the Opscode’s Chef cloud infrastructure automation software, organizations have a powerful open source-based solution for deploying, managing and scaling on-premise and hybrid clouds.”

Luke Kanies, CEO, Puppet Labs

“High availability is a sophisticated feature that is essential for enterprise applications, and Eucalyptus 3 is the only private cloud software that delivers it. We are pleased to offer our continued support for Eucalyptus through the Eucalyptus-Puppet Integration Kit, which gives cloud resource and data center administrators a faster and more efficient way to manage clouds and enterprise data centers using Puppet.”
