Fujitsu Receives 2012 Computerworld Honor Award for Response to Earthquake and Tsunami

June 5, 2012 No Comments

SOURCE: Fujitsu

Sunnyvale, CALIF., June 5, 2012 Fujitsu today announced it has been awarded the 21st Century Achievement Award for its fast and innovative response to the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Using information technology, Fujitsu responded immediately on March 11, 2011, to ensure social, industrial, economic and educational infrastructure was available in the wake of the natural disaster. Fujitsu was selected from a pool of 20 finalists in the Environment category; it was the only Japanese company nominated in 2012, and one of only three non-US based companies.

When the earthquake hit, the Fujitsu disaster support teams quickly developed a cloud-based, real-time information solution – spanning hardware, software and services – that allowed evacuation centers to align the efforts of non-profit organizations with the concrete needs of disaster victims. Beyond enterprise solutions, Fujitsu offered 2,000 LIFEBOOK® notebooks/Tablet PCs to 100 evacuation centers, giving local people access to the Internet, real-time information and safety information, allowing for communication with families to stay in touch with evacuees from outside the disaster area. Further examples of the response from Fujitsu can be found on the case study website.

For 24 years, IDG’s Computerworld Honors program recognizes those organizations that create and use information technology to promote and advance the public welfare, benefit society and change the world for the better.
