Next-Generation Cloud Infrastructure Management Platform Streamlines the Transition to Amazon Web Services for VIP Art Fair
Boulder, CO — April 3, 2012 — OpDemand, provider of innovative solutions for agile IT operations, today announced it successfully powered VIP Art Fair 2.0, the second edition of the leading online contemporary art event. OpDemand’s cloud management platform streamlined VIP Art Fair’s transition to a new Amazon Web Services-powered hosting environment that features auto-scaling technology which automatically grows server capacity to meet peak demand.
VIP Art Fair translates the experience of a traditional brick-and-mortar fair to an online location with more than 135 exhibitors from 35 countries. To prepare for VIP 2.0, Severin Andrieu-Delille, VIP Art Fair’s new VP of Engineering, was tasked with making significant improvements to overcome the setbacks encountered during the January 2011 Fair. At the inaugural event, an overwhelming amount of traffic broke core functionality, resulting in negative feedback and press. To avoid a repeat performance, Andrieu-Delille opted to move from managed hosting to a cloud-based approach, selecting Amazon Web Services with a management-layer powered by OpDemand.
VIP 2.0, held in February 2012, was a huge success, serving significantly more traffic than the prior year. There were 73,000 registrants in 2012, up from 39,000 in 2011. VIP 2.0 also had 150,000 visits over the span of seven days and 1.5 million page views, up from 600,000 in 2011.
OpDemand contributed to a seamless VIP 2.0. OpDemand’s infrastructure blueprints made for a simple transition to AWS. The company’s streamlined management experience helped Andrieu-Delille and his team to deploy updated code and configuration on demand. OpDemand’s auto-scaling capabilities ensured the new site could handle a significant increase in traffic, demonstrated by load testing done prior to the event.
“OpDemand delivers an incredibly practical tool that streamlines the process of deploying and managing cloud infrastructure by allowing me to push new code and configuration to 20+ servers with the click of a button,” said Andrieu-Delille. “Without OpDemand, our deployment infrastructure would need to be engineered manually, which is nearly impossible to do in an auto scaling environment. A do-it-yourself approach would have wasted time and money.”
“The immediate value our users experience validates the significant market demand for a cloud infrastructure management solution that streamlines a complex assembly process and cuts unnecessary costs,” said Joshua Schnell, CEO of OpDemand. “OpDemand’s interface offers five powerful controls that let users start, stop, deploy, clone and destroy cloud services and applications with the click of a button, making management of cloud services intuitive and easy.”
