The d’Amico Group Increases Employee Collaboration and Productivity with Private Cloud Enabled by Riverbed WAN Optimization

SAN FRANCISCO – November 28, 2012 – Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the performance company, today announced d’Amico Società di Navigazione, a global shipping organization that supplies dry and oil tankers to customers worldwide, is using Riverbed® wide area network (WAN) optimization solutions to support a data center consolidation initiative as part of a migration to a private cloud. The deployment of Steelhead® appliances at the centralized data center and branch offices, and Steelhead® Mobile software for remote and mobile users, allowed d’Amico Società di Navigazione to improve collaboration across multiple teams and employee productivity. By using the Steelhead® product family, the company was able to deploy new collaborative and productivity-enhancing services to employees, including VoIP and video conferencing, and still reduce bandwidth consumption by 5x.

d’Amico Società di Navigazione owns around 60 bulkers and tankers, each of which carries bulk commodities, such as cement products, grain, coal, iron, or refined oil products. The workforce includes mobile workers, as well as teams working from offices in Italy, France, Monaco, UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Singapore, Philippines, and Canada. d’Amico Società di Navigazione carried out a data center consolidation initiative as part of a migration to a private cloud solution that would centralize the management of its business operations and allow multiple teams to collaborate using commonly accessed files. The consolidation initiative included the removal of 20 local email servers from the branch offices to reduce management and maintenance costs. The challenge the company faced was the additional time it took for employees to access files and collaborate over the WAN after local branch office servers were removed and files and applications were relocated to the data center.

“We supplied more than enough bandwidth to our remote sites, but employees complained of poor application performance. We acknowledged that this problem was mainly due to the distance and latency across the WAN, and therefore increasing our bandwidth would not resolve the issue,” said Pietro Amorusi, chief information officer at d’Amico Società di Navigazione. “We tested products from three WAN optimization vendors, and the Riverbed Steelhead products gave us the best results for accelerating application performance over the WAN. In addition, the Steelhead appliances were the easiest to deploy and manage, which made selecting Riverbed the overall best choice for us.”

With the Riverbed Steelhead appliances and Steelhead Mobile client software deployed at all eight branch offices, employees can now share centralized files at LAN-like speeds, which has improved collaboration across multiple teams, and improved employee productivity.
In addition, the deployment of the Steelhead products resulted in a 5x reduction in bandwidth usage, and allowed d’Amico Società di Navigazione to make new services available to its employees over the WAN, including VoIP and video conferencing services, without incurring additional bandwidth costs.

“Originally, we looked at WAN optimization as a tactical solution to solve our distance and latency issues. However, we quickly realized that with the bandwidth and cost savings we could be much more strategic and could enable greater employee collaboration and productivity,” added Amorusi.
