Teaching an online course is a great entrepreneurial step to venture into. Your students will love the convenience of learning from home. You can cater your material to people all across the globe, help them develop real-life skills, and offer them individualized attention.

Setting up an online course will take some time and effort on your part. You can use tools like the software at Roverd to set up class schedules, plan multi-day online activities, and offer different payment options.

However, setting up an online course isn’t all about the management portal you use.

If you are interested in making some extra cash or developing your brand by teaching an online course, here are 6 tips to follow for optimal success.

1)   Select the Perfect Course Topic

You won’t be qualified to teach every subject, and that is perfectly okay. Before you go any further, you need to select the ideal course topic to teach based on your interests and skills. What are you most passionate about? What are you proficient at?

If you have a degree and years of experience working in cybersecurity, you could excel at teaching a course on improving security within the workplace. Or, maybe you work by day as an application software developer and want to teach others how to make their own apps by night.

As long as you love your topic, are good at it, and have some type of formal or real-life experience with it, you are more than qualified to teach it to others.

2)   Establish Clear-Cut Learning Outcomes

What do you want your students to walk away from your course with? If you fail to establish clear learning outcomes, you risk frustrating both yourself and your customers.

Make sure they know the expected learning outcomes from the get-go. These could be the skills they should be able to demonstrate, the knowledge they should gain, or the feelings they should have moved toward or away from.

3)   Assemble Your Course Content

You might know exactly what you want to teach but putting it all into comprehensible lesson plans can be difficult. Decide on the most important information you want to convey and ensure that all your lessons will help students meet your pre-determined learning objectives.

4)   Determine the Delivery Method You Want to Use

The ideal delivery method for your course will depend on the topic you’re teaching. Some material will be better presented via audio or video content. You may also need to incorporate reading content and interactive activities.

What technology do you want to use? If you’re not a tech guru, it’s best to stick to what you’re comfortable with. If you want to try to use more advanced technology, make sure to do a trial run before entering the real thing with actual students to avoid looking unprofessional.

5)   Establish Your Pricing Model

Determine how your course will fit into your overall business model. Is your course the main thing you’re going to be selling? Or, will you be offering it for free? Some business owners choose to offer an educational course for free as a way to lead into selling a primary product or service.

6)   Advertise

Now that you’ve set up your online course, you must do everything you can to get the word out about it.

Do not assume that you have a reliable income stream just because your course is up-and-running. You will need to launch an effective marketing strategy to advertise your classes.

Consider factors like the social media platforms you’ll use, partnerships with specific influencers, and whether or not you’ll run early bird discounts.

Once your course gets up-and-running, do not allow your marketing efforts to slip. If you can handle it, bring on more clientele. Make appropriate changes to handle an influx of new students, like increasing the number of classes you offer or bringing an additional instructor or two on-board.

The Bottom Line

We hope you’re now ready to start planning your course content and the start of your new business endeavor. By following these 6 tips, you’ll create a brilliant course and capture the attention of students around the world.
