Palo Alto, CA – November 15, 2011 – The dynamic nature of cloud computing provides a natural complement to modular middleware in giving IT professionals the agility to readily adapt their applications and services to changing demands. IT architects, developers and managers can gain insights into the synergies of these technologies and best practices for implementing them by attending the WSO2 workshop, “Carbon and Stratos: Understanding Cloud-Enabled Modular Middleware.”

The one-day, hands-on technical workshop will run Thursday, November 30, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., at the Ramada Colombo in Colombo, Sri Lanka. For more information, visit http://wso2.com/events/workshops/2011-november-colombo-carbon-stratos-workshop.

The event is part of WSO2’s global education initiative in November featuring technical workshops in the Asia-Pacific, Brazil, Europe, and North America.

Understanding Cloud-Enabled Modular Middleware

The workshop will explore core cloud and service-oriented architecture (SOA) concepts around multi-tenancy, platform-as-a-service (PaaS), governance, and more. They also will examine how the 100% open source OSGi-compliant WSO2 Carbon middleware platform, WSO2 Stratos cloud middleware platform, and WSO2 StratosLive public PaaS provide a complete solution for enterprise computing—both on-premise and in the cloud. Participants will be encouraged to use their laptops to set up a cloud tenant during the hands-on workshop.

Workshop session topics will include:

  • WSO2 Carbon and OSGi: This session will focus on why OSGi-compliant modular middleware is important. Attendees also will review the core model of WSO2 Carbon, including open source licensing, benefits and approaches.
  • Understanding WSO2 ESB, Application Server, Data Services and Registry:Attendees will learn how the main components in WSO2 Carbon fit together, and they will explore the benefits of an enterprise service bus (ESB) based approach, integration and an SOA, and governance and monitoring.
  • Installing and Using Stratos: This session will introduce cloud middleware and PaaS, using WSO2 Stratos and WSO2 StratosLive. It also will examine the benefits of multi-tenancy, elasticity and metering in a cloud environment.
  • Understanding the Stratos Services and Data in the Cloud: Attendees will take a deeper look at the internals of WSO2 Stratos; how to manage data in the cloud, including polyglot and multi-tenant data; and how to build Web applications that are delivered as software-as-a-service (SaaS).
  • Engagement Model: This final session will cover how WSO2 works—from agile development and Quickstart implementation models to licensing, business models, and case studies.

Workshop Presenters

The workshop will be led by two senior experts in SOA and cloud architecture.

Samisa Abeysinghe, WSO2 vice president of engineering, has been a committer of the Apache Software Foundation Web services project since May 2004, and he initiated the Apache Axis2/C project. Samisa also has published several articles and two books: “RESTful PHP Web Services” and “PHP Team Development,” and he is a featured speaker at numerous industry conferences.

Dr. Srinath Perera is a senior software architect on the WSO2 solution architecture team. He is a member of the Apache Software Foundation, serving as a Project Management Committee (PMC) member of the Apache Web Service project, which he has been involved in since 2002. Srinath also is a co-founder of Apache Axis2, as well as a committer on the Apache Axis, Apache Axis2, and Apache Geronimo projects.
