Files are the life-blood of a business. They are also the persistent memory of every digital family. The need to store files is ubiquitous. The competition to own the digital shoebox for individuals and businesses is fierce. New entrants appear every week and old players are at risk of slow death. End-users are adopting every conceivable solution, in every conceivable combination.

The selections have never been more varied. Pricing wars and friendly utilities are increasing the velocity of file migrations—users are able and willing to chase the lowest cost gigabyte. Users expect that their apps be able to keep up. Developers must integrate with multiple systems capable of storing and retrieving files to satisfy fickle consumers.

There are a lot of them. In spite of the similarities in the domain—a file is a file, after all— there is a shocking variety in the implementations among file storage systems. App Developers who are tempted to add Dropbox to their app to get started will find themselves sliding down the slippery slope. Enterprise Developers who are tempted to build a point-to-point integration to Filenet will find themselves on that same slopping slide.
